As a lawyer and educator, Martha advises and teaches artists and designers working in all disciplines and formats on how to collaborate and manage their work. Martha provides advice to artists in all disciplines including photography, video, mutlimedia, painting, sculpture, performing artists, filmmakers, surface artists, communications designers, dancers, poets and writers.
Clients include: Jill Anholt, Cedric Bomford, Reece Terris, Sonny Assu, Kris Elgstrand, Neil Campbell, Tania Willard, Eric Deis.
In addition to her work with individual artists she works with all kinds of arts organizations including the Museum of Vancouver, PuSh Festival, Progress Lab (Creative Space Society) Urban Ink Productions
She has a number of digital creative clients Raised Eyebrow Web Studio, Vancouver is Awesome, numerous individual graphic designers.
Martha on Copyright
Creativity flourishes irrespective of the law. It always has and it always will. It does not exist in isolation from how and where artists work, present, speak, perform, build and think. Creativity requires some level of support and, for many artists, copyright has supplanted arts funding as the mechanism through which society recognizes and implicitly values their creativity.In August 2009, Martha attended and spoke at the Government of Canada's Copyright Consultation Townhall in Toronto. In March 2012, Martha appeared at the Parliamentary Committee Meetings to provide evidence on Bill C-11 An Act to Amend the Copyright Act. Read her statement here.
In November 2012, Martha appeared on CTV News to comment on the unauthorized reproduction of the artwork of Hilary Morris and the importance of recognizing the integrity and reputation of artists. See the clip here.
Martha Rans Cyberpunk Prize
Peer 2 Peer University awards the Martha Rans Cyberpunk Prize to students who demonstrate "exceptional creativity and a good. old-fashioned punk attitude." In 2010, it was awarded to Alexa Paultre for her comic, Blaze.
