Martha advises charity clients on how to register and run a charitable organization, and manage their audit and compliance responsibilities. As a labour and employment lawyer for 10 years providing advice to community & social service organizations she has in-depth knowledge of the human resource issues affecting charities. She was a highly regarded mediator with the BC Human Rights Commission handling many multi-party disputes many of which involved community and social service providers. She is an expert on privacy and its impact on community and social service providers. As well, she was a presenter to CLEBC Charities and Non Profit Law Bi-Annual Conference 2009 with Suzanne Kennedy on privacy issues. In 2014 and 2016 she co-chaired the conference speaking on Anti-Spam Legislation and new Societies Act bylaw issues. She was a participant in the Minister of National Revenue's Roundtable on the Political Activities of Charities held in November 2016.
As part of her practice she advises charities in all sectors including housing, healthcare, community services and the arts. In 2012, she participated on the CBA National Charities and Non Profit Law Section submission to the CRA on its Proposed Guidance to Arts Charities. She has guided many arts organizations to successfully registering as charities including the Burrard Arts Foundation, the Eastside Culture Crawl, the Joy Kogawa House Society and 110 Arts.
